Amechi Uwani Celebrates Ofalla Festival in Enugu
Activities slowed across Enugu on Saturday as Amechi Uwani, a prominent community in Enugu South Local Government Area, celebrated its annual Ofalla Festival.
Residents and visitors gathered as the community rolled out the drums for the colourful cultural event.
Professor Victor Nnam Receives Highest Chieftaincy Honour
During the festival, Amechi Uwani conferred its highest chieftaincy title on Professor Victor Nnam, a former Enugu State Commissioner for Lands and Urban Development.
The traditional ruler, HRH Igwe Joseph O. Ogbodo, Ohachirieze II of Amechi Uwani, performed the ceremony at Ofia-Utu, Amechi Uwani. He presented Professor Nnam with the revered title of Ugwu of Enugu.
Igwe Ogbodo said the honour recognised Professor Nnam’s contributions to youth empowerment, community service, and transformational leadership. He described him as a worthy ambassador of Amechi Uwani.
Honour Reflects Years of Service
The chieftaincy title stands as the highest honour in Amechi Uwani. It reflects Professor Nnam’s decades of commitment to social development and youth upliftment across Enugu State.
Professor Nnam Responds
Speaking after his installation, Professor Nnam, a Professor of Geoinformatics and Surveying, thanked the monarch and the people of Amechi Uwani.
He described the recognition as the pinnacle of honour. According to him, no honour equals recognition from one’s king and community.
“As the Ugwu of Enugu, I commit to guiding our youth toward excellence, promoting self-reliance, and inspiring positive change,” he said.
Festival Marks Monarch’s Anniversary
The Ofalla Festival also marked the 12th anniversary of Igwe Ogbodo’s ascension to the throne.
Community leaders attended the event alongside indigenes from all kindreds. Amechi Uwani sons and daughters in the diaspora also returned home for the celebration.
Other Honours and Past Titles
The community honoured several other distinguished sons and daughters with chieftaincy titles during the festival.
In August 2020, Professor Nnam received the title of Ugwu-Eku of Amechi from his Umunnugwu kindred.
On December 20, 2025, the traditional ruler of Abor Ancient Kingdom in Udi Local Government Area conferred on him the title “Nnanyelugo Abor.”
